Motherboard

These pieces developed through experimentation with a thick black gloss paint that would usually be used for household purposes. The technique I use is to pick up the paint with the end of a stick and let it drip onto the paper, then move the stick to points on a grid, letting the paint spread and stretch. It is a kind of controlled dripping technique.

I liked the motherboard idea when coming up with a title. A computer motherboard is the central controlling area for any computer, something that has now become ubiquitous in our lives. It is the mother of all the components attached to it.

The Motherboard Technique

This video shows the controlled drip technique I use when creating the motherboard pieces. I first have to add pencil dots to represent the grid and to guide the dripping.
